From Signing Line to Social Media: How to Make the Most of Your Book Event Content

As a newly published author you’ve had a team of editors, beta readers, ARC readers, publishers, cover artists and personal super fans supporting you through every step of the publishing journey. Now it’s time to celebrate with a book launch and signing event, the movement where all your hard work gets to shine.

Event days are filled with anticipation and a long list of to-dos. You might go in with the best intentions to capture a few panning videos of your table display, a selfie photo to post to your Instagram account and maybe even asking your significant other or friend to grab some behind the scenes shots. But once the event starts, the excitement, nerves and whirlwind energy take over and all those plans to capture content quickly fade away.

Before you know it, the event is over, the memories are fresh, but there are no photos or videos to share. We’ve all been there, big moment and zero content. That’s where having a dedicated photographer makes all the difference.

Imagine handing off that responsibility to someone who's not just taking pictures, but intentionally capturing your story, with future marketing and promo in mind. These photos aren’t just for your recap post; they become assets you can use in email newsletters, on your website, in media kits and across platforms like Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube.

Here’s a fun fact about me, I love books and the authors who write them. I’ve collected over 200 signed books and have been to many author events. When first time indie author Alexa Shay asked me to photograph her book launch, I was thrilled to not only support her visually but also guide her through planning elements of the event.

We discussed everything from the book reading, Q&A time and of course the signing line which are the traditional parts of every author event. Since I was already photographing the event, adding short phone video clips for reels and recap content was a natural and easy addition.

In addition to the traditional event photos, we also added on a mini bookstore headshot photos before the event. With permission from the bookstore we took a few photos of her books on the shelves and within the stacks.  It was fun, magical, intentional and aligned with her brand as an author.

Professional lifestyle headshots in an authentic setting

Before guests arrived, we planned 30 minutes in the bookstore to capture updated headshots for Alexa. Surrounded by shelves, stories, and her own book on display, the setting felt aligned with her journey and brand. These weren’t stiff or overly posed, they were warm, fun, and full of intention. It’s a simple add-on that gives authors content they can use long after the event, from bios to future promo to social media posts.

Event Photos to build connections and create future marketing materials

During the event, I focused on capturing more than just the timeline, I looked for the moments that told the full story. The happiness during the reading, the fun of Q&A, the joy during the signing. These images help your audience feel like they were part of something special, even if they couldn’t attend. And beyond connection, they become powerful assets for promoting future events, pitching to bookstores, or adding polish to your website and press kits.

The Value of Book Launch Photography for Authors

Whether it’s your debut or your latest release, your book launch is a moment worth documenting with care and intention. Professional photos and short video clips give you more than just memories, they become tools to grow your presence, connect with readers, and confidently show up as the author you are. From mini headshots to event storytelling, every image can serve a purpose beyond the day itself. If you're planning an event, let’s make sure you walk away with content that celebrates your success and supports your future.

Alexa's Testimonial

"Kristina was invaluable during the book launch party for my first book (this was also my first author event). I was too overwhelmed with setting things up, hosting, and meeting people to remember to film and take pictures for social media. Not only did she capture photos that I've been able to use on my website and across my social media platforms, she also snagged some videos that I could use for content later. She helped me with set up and gave me advice based on past events she's worked at. I was beyond grateful for her advice, calming presence, and the images and videos I received from her. She will be my go to photographer for any professional photos going forward."
