How Do I Get Comfortable in Front of the Camera During a Branding Photoshoot?
As photographers, we hear it all the time:
- “I’m not photogenic!”
- “I don’t like having my photo taken.”
- “I never know what to do in photos.”
- “I don’t like the way I look.”
- “I don’t look like myself in pictures.”
- “You don’t want me in front of your camera—I’ll break it!”
- “I need to lose X pounds before I book a shoot.”
Sound familiar? You’re not alone and I’ve said some of these things too. These kinds of thoughts can feel like real mental blocks, and they can take time (and compassion) to move through.
Because I'm a big book lover and believer in mindset work, I often recommend some of my favorite reads to help support this healing journey:
- The Emotion Code by Bradley Nelson (for active emotional release techniques)
- Daring Greatly by Brené Brown
- The Mountain Is You by Brianna Wiest
- You Are a Badass by Jen Sincero
- You Can Heal Your Life by Louise Hay
But let’s say you’ve reached a point where you want to be seen and even if you’re still a little nervous. That’s the perfect time to hire a personal branding photographer.
And the real answer to “How do I get comfortable on a branding photoshoot?”
It comes down to this:
The Right Photographer
Preparation
Communication
Choosing the Right Personal Branding Photographer
The most important piece? You need to vibe with them. You should genuinely like their energy, feel heard and supported, and trust that they’ll guide you every step of the way.
Branding photography isn’t just showing up and snapping pictures—it’s a whole process. A good photographer walks you through it, helps you get clear on your vision, and makes space for your personality to shine.
Be seen. Be heard. Be supported.
Preparing for Your Branding Photoshoot
I can’t tell you how many times I’ve heard people say they had to plan their own shoot—or worse, had no planning support. That should never be the case with a branding photoshoot.
Preparation is everything. From helping you choose outfits that look great on camera (and feel like you) to crafting the visual story of your brand, the pre-production phase is where confidence starts building.
When you feel good in what you’re wearing, when the outfits reflect different aspects of who you are and your business, that comfort shows up on camera. The nerves ease up. The energy shifts.
Communication Makes the Magic Happen
Before the shoot: You should receive a thorough branding questionnaire, visual inspiration guidance, and clear communication—so you’re not left guessing. Ask all the questions! I’m here for that.
During the shoot: This is where the real-time coaching comes in. You won’t need to worry about what to do with your hands, where to look, or how to pose. I’ll guide you every step of the way:
“Chin down. Now a little up. Look slightly over your shoulder. Great—now down. Look out the window. Look at me and give me a big laugh. (Yes, even if it feels weird, I’m catching the real laugh at the end!) Relax your hands. Drop your shoulder. Let me clip your top a bit for more shape—boom, you nailed it. Look at that smile!”
And when you see those sneak peeks on the back of the camera? That moment when you realize, Oh wow, that’s really me? That’s when it clicks—you deserve to be seen. You’re the face of your business. Your audience wants to connect with you.
A Client Story: From Nervous to Natural
Client Tanya, a mental health therapist, shared this about her experience:
“I’m not someone who’s naturally comfortable in front of a camera, and I’ve never done a real photoshoot before, but working with Kristina felt unexpectedly healing. She made me feel so at ease, and somehow captured the exact tone and energy I was hoping for without me having to explain much. It felt like she really got me. The whole process was grounding, organized, thoughtful, and honestly kind of magical. The business branding photos we got are going to last me a really long time, but I already know I’ll find excuses to work with her again before then.”
For Tanya’s shoot, we started in a studio where I gave her structured posing guidance. Then we moved to her office to capture a more relaxed, natural vibe like she was in a session with a client. By the time we were outdoors, she was flowing into poses and needing very little direction. And that very last shot? She posed herself perfectly. The confidence built with every click of the shutter.
To feel comfortable and confident in front of the camera, you need the right support behind it. A photographer who prepares you fully, helps you select clothing that reflects your energy, and directs you with care and clarity on shoot day makes all the difference.
You don’t have to feel “photogenic.” You just need someone who sees you and helps the world see you too.
